Pepe Leal, Awarded AD Interior Designer of the Year (2018)

septimo

Pepe Leal is one of the most internationally recognized interior designers, some of them determined as the funniest face of luxury. In addition, he has been a member of the jury in the “Masters in Reform” TV program, not the first time that he faces the cameras and is comfortable with them. Pepe has a natural ease and self-confidence with which he manages to fill any space (or screen).

He studied History of Art and moved to London in the 90s, but on his return to Madrid in 1998, he opened his first architecture studio. The following year, he participated in Casa Decor with a very risky proposal for the time: a very modern bathroom with a terrace that made him stand out and be spotted.

His projects are eclectic, inspired by travel and art, and are full of freshness, color and spontaneity. He likes to surround himself with natural elements, such as stone and marbles, and has managed to create a personal and joyful seal. Pepe was awarded the Interiores magazine Award (2017) and a year later with the prestigious AD Award as best interior designer of the year.

We wanted to know his most creative and personal facet a little more closely, we hope you like his interview for Les Créations de la Maison.

What do those who really love you call you?
By my name! It is true that my mother, with that motherly love that characterizes her, calls me “Peporro” or “Pópo” and my sister “Gorri”.

What is your favourite app?
Smule, because I like to sing. And also The Parking because it works perfectly well. I get great pleasure when apps always work perfectly, and intuitively; and this one definitely does!

If you were not an Interior Designer you would be…
Architect, probably. But what I would have liked to be is a singer or an actor, or both at the same time.

Who have you missed most during confinement?
My team and friends.

Reveal me a hidden paradise.
The Dudú lagoon in the Dominican Republic (a crystal clear water cenote with stalactite roofs), where I have had the best bath of my life.

Give advice to someone who starts working in your profession.
Do you really want to do this? If the answer is yes, then watch and travel a lot. I would invest in a good psychologist to know how to manage the hardest parts of this profession. Although I am not much of giving advice.

I have to paint my new house, what color do you advise me?
I need to know much more about the house, about you, where it is and many other things before recommending you a color.

Tomorrow is my birthday and I’m in your city, where can I go to have dinner?
Aarde. A sophisticated menu, a fun atmosphere and a very Madrid location. What more could you ask for?

What “quote” or “motto” defines how you live life?
No idea! I think it is impossible to specify it in one word, not even in one sentence. I am so contradictory in so many ways…

What is your favourite spot in your house?
The sofa on my terrace! I love lying down to watch movies on summer nights, watching the Madrid sky above me.

Surprise us with something about your personality.
Well no one thinks I’m super shy.

Do you have a pet? What’s his or her name?
Not now. I had a Fox Terrier for 19 years whose name was Benito. One of the most attractive ideas of the existence of heaven as paradise is, for me, the possibility of being able to meet Benito again.

What’s the song that always makes you dance?
So many! Lately I jump with Blinding Lights from The Weekend.

Tell me a trend in deco that is coming and we don’t know yet…
If I knew it, I would be rich!

Unconfessable mania.
The truth is that I do not see myself as very manic, and I find it hard to think of any hobby. Oh yeah! I always like to draw with sharpened pencils; I cannot draw with a worn pencil.

Baptize the color of this fabric from Les Créations de la Maison:
Carlton, color 1.
